Per speculum in Aenigmate

Painting
2010

This project showcases a collection of works developed as a thesis project, concluding my studies at the Urbino Institute of Higher Education. It centers on the theme of perception, delving into various perceptual mechanisms. Through optical illusions and the use of reflection, it deconstructs these mechanisms to explore how sensory and visual data are processed to create our perception of reality.

The piece on stereoscopy presents two seemingly identical paintings. However, each represents the view from one eye—left or right. Through a reflective mechanism, observers at a certain point can overlay these images, enhancing the depth perception beyond that of a single painting.

Using a small mirror, one can overlay the view of a real still life with its pictorial representation, bridging the gap between reality and artistic interpretation.

One installation focuses on anamorphosis, where a subject, painted across one or more angled planes, appears perfectly upright from a specific viewpoint.

Another features an eye painted at the center of three angled panels, creating the illusion that the eye follows the observer’s movements.

This refined translation aims to maintain the sophisticated tone suitable for an artist’s website, emphasizing the innovative and thought-provoking nature of the work.
