St. Giusto Park, a spacious underground parking located beneath St. Giusto Hill at the city’s center, employs a dual approach to enhance navigability and aesthetic appeal: strategic signage and engaging murals.
Signage within this extensive subterranean facility is thoughtfully designed to counter the absence of natural reference points. Floors are color-coded for easy identification, while key locations like junctions and elevators feature straightforward maps to indicate structure layout and user location. Directional signage, applied directly to the walls with stencils, facilitates effortless orientation.
Conversely, the murals introduce an element of cultural enrichment. The pathway leading to the elevator, which connects the hill’s summit with the downtown area and is popular among tourists, is adorned with a series of murals. These artworks segment the journey into illustrative scenes that capture distinctive city elements: a celebrated auto race, scenes from the old city, the vibrancy of port life, and the industrial rhythm of the shipyard. Each mural is paired with a plaque providing succinct narratives, merging visual art with historical and local context.
